February is a month often centered on care, connection, and protection—making it the perfect time to talk about digital safety for children. At Dolphin House Child Advocacy Center, we know that while technology can be an incredible tool for learning and connection, it can also expose children to risks if safeguards aren’t in place. Online exploitation, inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and online grooming are real concerns for families in every community.
The good news is that prevention starts at home, and there are practical steps parents and caregivers can take to help keep children safe online.

Why Digital Safety Matters
Children today are growing up online. Social media, gaming platforms, messaging apps, and streaming services can all create opportunities for unsafe interactions. Many offenders use the internet to gain access to children by building trust over time, often without a child or caregiver realizing what’s happening.
Teaching children digital safety skills early—and reinforcing them often—can significantly reduce risk.

Preventative Measures Parents Can Take
Start the Conversation Early and Keep It Ongoing
Talk openly with your child about internet use in age-appropriate ways. Let them know they can come to you if something online makes them uncomfortable or confused—without fear of getting in trouble.
Set Clear Rules and Expectations
Establish guidelines for screen time, approved apps and games, and where devices can be used (such as keeping screens in shared family spaces). Consistency helps children understand boundaries.
Use Parental Controls and Privacy Settings
Enable parental controls on devices, apps, and streaming services. Review privacy settings regularly to limit who can contact your child and what information is visible.
Know Who Your Child Is Talking To
Ask about friends they interact with online, including gaming and social platforms. Remind children that people online may not be who they say they are and that they should never share personal information.
Teach Safe Sharing
Help children understand that photos, videos, and messages can be saved or shared—even if they disappear. Encourage them never to send images of their body or personal details to anyone.
Model Healthy Digital Behavior
Children learn from what they see. Modeling respectful online communication and balanced screen use reinforces healthy habits.
Trust Your Instincts
Sudden changes in behavior, secrecy around devices, or emotional distress after being online can be signs that something is wrong. If you’re concerned, reach out for support.
