April Is Child Abuse Prevention Month: Together We Can Protect Children

by | Apr 1, 2026 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness, strengthening families, and reminding our community that preventing child abuse is a responsibility we all share. At Dolphin House Child Advocacy Center, this month is especially meaningful as we reflect on our mission to protect children, promote healing, and support families throughout the 7th Judicial District.

The Meaning of the Blue Pinwheel 💙

You’ll often see blue pinwheels displayed during April—and for good reason. The pinwheel is the national symbol for child abuse prevention. It represents hope, joy, playfulness, and the bright future every child deserves. Just as pinwheels spin freely in the wind, children should be able to grow up safe, supported, and free from harm.

Pinwheels also remind us that prevention is possible when communities come together to support children and families before abuse occurs.

Prevention Starts With Community

While Dolphin House responds when abuse has occurred, true prevention happens every day—in homes, schools, neighborhoods, and community spaces. Small actions can make a big difference.

Here are ways community members can help prevent child abuse:

Support Families

  • Offer help to parents and caregivers who may be feeling overwhelmed.
  • Simple gestures—babysitting, delivering a meal, or checking in—can reduce stress and isolation.

Be a Trusted Adult

  • Listen to children and take them seriously.
  • Believe children when they share concerns and know how to report suspected abuse.

Learn the Signs

  • Changes in behavior, unexplained injuries, fearfulness, or withdrawal may signal something is wrong.
  • Trust your instincts—if something doesn’t feel right, speak up.

Create Safe Spaces

  • Advocate for child-safe policies in schools, sports, and youth programs.
  • Encourage environments where children feel respected and protected.

Promote Prevention Education

  • Talk openly about body safety, boundaries, and consent in age-appropriate ways.
  • Share prevention resources with friends, family, and coworkers.

Dolphin House: A Place of Hope and Healing

At Dolphin House Child Advocacy Center, we work every day to ensure children who have experienced abuse are met with compassion, advocacy, and coordinated support. Child Abuse Prevention Month reminds us that our work is strongest when our entire community stands together for children.

This April, we invite you to plant a pinwheel, wear blue, start a conversation, and take action—because every child deserves a safe childhood and a hopeful future.
