As October comes to an end, we hope to recognize victims and raise awareness about the devastating impact of domestic violence.
Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship used by one’s partner to gain or maintain power and control over another partner. This kind of abuse affects everyone – men, women, and children of all races, religions, and cultures – without prejudice.
To help prevent domestic violence, it is important to recognize the warning signs. Signs often begin subtly and worsen over time. While not all-inclusive, the following list may indicate potential signs of domestic violence.
- Isolation
- Low self- esteem
- Unexplained injuries
- Depression/ anxiety
Nearly 3 in 10 women (29%) and 1 in 10 men (10%) in the US have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by a partner and reported it having a related impact on their functioning.
An average of 24 people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States — more than 12 million women and men over the course of a single year.
Unfortunately, Domestic Violence affects our local community as well. The Montrose Police Department responded to approximately 13 domestic violence incidents per month in 2022. In 2023, this number has climbed to approximately 17 per month.
Oftentimes, children bear witness to these violent acts. The Dolphin House in 2022 saw 23 children for witness to violence cases. The 7th Judicial District Attorney’s Office was able to identify 56 instances of domestic violence in which children were “unreasonably placed in a situation that posed a threat of injury to the child’s life or health.” (CRS 18-6-401) Year-to-date The Dolphin House has served 32 children as witnesses of violence, marking an increase in both trend and severity.
Encourage outreach to people who can provide help and guidance.
